I recently wrote a blog post titled “Mobility Matters” where I mentioned KPCB partner Mary Meeker’s annual report on Internet Trends.   In my post, I discussed how B2B software developers need to pay attention to what’s becoming a heavy industry emphasis on mobile platforms and the amazing growth/adoption rates of tablets and smartphones when compared to traditional PCs.

Yesterday, Josh Constine of TechCrunch  blogged about a recent mobile internet trends presentation by Meeker where she provided an update to some of the key stats from her early report in May.

Here are some updates called out from the TechCrunch post:

  • Mary presented that iPad adoption is ramping up at 5x times faster than iPhone adoption, which she previously noted was at 3x in her May report.
  • While Android adoption is at 6x adoption to iPhone adoption rates, which was at a 4x rate as reported in Meeker’s May report.
  • By the end of Q2 2013, Meeker believes the global smartphone plus tablet install base will surpass the install base of the PC.

Josh does a great job of explaining these revised internet trend projections, so I wanted to share that information with our community.  Its important as we head into 2013 to consider the importance of these mobile adoption trends as B2B software publishers develop software monetization strategies.   If you think about how people get their work done, it is likely that many enterprise business applications will eventually be broken down into separate components and will be augmented by mobile support.  As we move forward, some components will likely reside exclusively on mobile devices to serve specific functions,  while other aspects will remain desktop or server based components for centralized functions.  To take this a bit further, the device by which an end user consumes software will ultimately become a secondary consideration.
